To bring the Broadway magic to our SCT stage, we knew we wanted to include swings just like the professional productions! Because of the layout of our stage, doing this would cause our actors to swing out over the audience! The challenge was ensuring the swings were safe for our young performers and audience members. Needing to have the ability to raise and raise and lower the swings to keep them out of the way when they weren’t needed without the luxury of a fly space was another challenge.
Our incredible dad took on the task of engineering the safest way to install and operate the swings. Safety checks were conducted before every rehearsal and performance to ensure everything was secure. Susannah, committed to leading by example, made sure she could perform each swing move herself before asking any of the kids to do it. She wanted to ensure that everyone felt safe and confident.
One memorable moment involved our "big boys" practicing their swing choreography. During rehearsal, Isaac had a minor mishap—he slipped off the front of the swing a bit too quickly, causing the edge of the swing to hit the back of his head. Despite the initial shock, Isaac was laughing and, fortunately, wasn't hurt. However, we noticed blood dripping from the back of his head. We quickly cleaned him up and made sure he was okay. The swing was cleaned, but the mark from the incident remained visible on the raw wood, serving as a little reminder of our adventures.
