Double the Fun, Double the Talent: Casting “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”

When casting for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, sponsored by ArkLaTex Adventure Club, we faced an exciting dilemma—so many talented kids showed up to audition that we decided to double-cast the show! While this decision came with its own set of challenges, such as twice the number of costumes, scene rehearsal taking twice as long, and the challenge of ensuring theatre patrons get to see their favorite performer, the benefits of double casting far outweigh the hassles.

Left to Right: Jimmy Smith and Reid Walling both play Ollie Herdman.

Why Double Casting is a Win-Win:

  1. More Opportunities for Young Actors
By double casting, more kids get the chance to shine on stage. It’s an incredible way to include as many talented young actors as possible in the magic of live theatre. Not only that, but each actor gets the chance to work closely with their counterpart, who is having a similar experience. This allows them to encourage each other, help with lines and blocking, and create a friendship that could last a lifetime.

  2. Two Unique Performances
Though the script remains the same, double casting results in two uniquely wonderful performances. Each cast brings its own strengths and creativity to the show, offering audiences a different but equally amazing experience with every viewing.

  3. Built-in Backup
With two casts, if someone can’t make a rehearsal or performance, we have an automatic fill-in who’s already familiar with the part. This creates a seamless experience for the production and provides extra peace of mind for everyone involved.

Double Cast Counterparts - Caroline Harp and Scout Watts (from L to R, first with hat and 3rd) will play Alice. Anna Jo Briggs and Kateleigh Crowson (from L to R, second and fourth) are playing Grace Bradley, the mom who gets the chance to be in charge of the Christmas Pageant this year, WITH the extra challenge of the Herdman siblings.

Frankincense & Myrrh Casts: The Power of Naming

To ensure the focus stays on collaboration and not competition, we avoid labeling our casts as Cast 1 and 2 or A and B. Instead, we embrace the holiday spirit with the Frankincense Cast and the Myrrh Cast. This way, both casts feel equally valued, contributing to a positive, supportive environment where everyone works together to put on the best show possible.

Get Your Tickets for Both Shows!

If you know someone in the cast, be sure to check whether they’re in the Frankincense or Myrrh cast before purchasing your tickets. And if you don’t have a favorite performer, we highly recommend attending both shows! You’ll be amazed at how two different groups of actors can bring the same story to life in uniquely magical ways.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever promises to be a show you won’t want to miss! November 21-24. Tickets will go on sale November 1 at silvermoonkids.com.
